We’re expanding our team at The Common Press and are looking for experienced booksellers and bartenders to join our queer and intersectional bookshop, café, bar and community space.
If you’re passionate about community spaces and queer literature, and want to help create a welcoming environment for our communities, we’d love to hear from you. From helping readers discover their next favourite book to serving drinks at our events and parties, you’ll play a vital role in supporting our queer and intersectional bookshops, cafés, bars and community spaces.
We’re recruiting for part-time weekend booksellers, as well as bartenders available for weekday and weekend evenings, including late finishes. Explore the roles below for details on responsibilities, pay and how to apply.
Bartender
£14.80 per/hr | Zero Hour Contract | London
We’re looking for experienced bar staff to join our team at The Common Press, our independent, queer and intersectional bookshop, bar and community space in Dalston.
You’ll help create a welcoming atmosphere for everyone visiting us, whether they’re attending a literary event, joining a community gathering, coming to a party or enjoying drinks with friends.
About the role

Welcoming guests with a friendly and approachable manner.

Able to confidently offer drink recommendations and answering questions about our menu.

Preparing and serving orders accurately and promptly, with care for quality and presentation.

Processing drink and book sales through the till accurately.

Keeping the bar stocked, clean and well organised throughout each shift.

Serving alcohol responsibly, including checking ID and refusing service when necessary.

Supporting evening events and parties, working late shifts and helping with closing duties.

Working collaboratively with colleagues to keep service running smoothly during busy events.
About you
You’ll have previous bar experience and be confident working in a lively, fast-paced environment. We’re looking for someone reliable and attentive who brings initiative, enjoys working as part of a team and makes guests feel welcome.
You’ll be comfortable engaging with people from a wide range of backgrounds and share our commitment to creating an inclusive space grounded in queer and intersectional values.
Pay and availability

Pay: £14.80 per hour.

Contract: Zero-hours contract.

Availability: Weekday and weekend evenings, including late finishes.

Weekend Bookseller / Barista

We’re looking for an enthusiastic bookseller to join our weekend team at The Common Press, our independent, queer and intersectional bookshop and community space.
You’ll have a strong interest in queer and intersectional literature, particularly work by LGBTQIA+ authors, Black writers, people of colour and writers from the Global Majority. You’ll enjoy sharing your knowledge, helping readers discover new books and making people feel welcome.
About the role
Working alongside our team, you’ll help keep the bookshop welcoming, organised and running smoothly. Your responsibilities will include:

Engaging with customers and offering thoughtful book recommendations.

Checking in deliveries, shelving new stock and keeping displays tidy.

Supporting our busy literary and community events programme.

Preparing and serving hot and cold drinks.
This is a part-time weekend position that will also include some evening shifts to support our events.
About you
You’ll be comfortable working in a lively, fast-paced environment and engaging with colleagues and customers from a wide range of backgrounds. We’re looking for someone who brings care, initiative and a collaborative approach, alongside a commitment to our intersectional values.
Previous bookselling, barista and retail experience is essential. Further bookselling and barista training will be provided.
